The numbers were too good
Elden Ring's expansion cycle posted sell-through that beat Bandai Namco's internal model by a wide margin. That should have been the end of the conversation.
Instead, it became the start of a new one: how do you forecast next year when you just blew the doors off this year? Executives don't love a baseline they can't beat.
The boardroom problem
Multiple sources describe a planning meeting where the question wasn't 'how do we keep this momentum,' but 'how do we manage the comp.' Translation: how do we explain a smaller number next year without looking like we lost.
The fix proposed in the room — staggered content drops, more aggressive monetization tests, an expanded mobile spin-off — sounds suspiciously like the playbook that has killed three live-service launches in the past 18 months.
What it means
Outsized success used to buy a studio breathing room. Now it buys a tighter leash and a bigger target on the next release.
FromSoftware will be fine. The lesson for everyone else is the bleak one: shipping a generational hit is, on the corporate ledger, also a problem.
